1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using the UN for the People platform ("Platform"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Platform.

Age requirement: You must be at least 16 years old to use this Platform. If you are under 16, you may only use the Platform with verifiable parental or guardian consent, in compliance with applicable law including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). By using the Platform, you confirm that you meet this age requirement.

2. Description of Service

UN for the People is a non-partisan civic platform for global direct democracy. It allows users to participate in polls, propose topics for debate, verify claims through community fact-checking, and join founding membership programs (Honorary Fellow and Ambassador). The Platform is provided free of charge.

Cookies and local storage: The Platform currently uses no advertising or third-party tracking cookies. It uses only browser localStorage and sessionStorage to store your anonymous session identifier, voting preferences and consent choices. No data stored locally is shared with third parties. If this policy changes in the future, we will aim to notify users and update the Privacy Policy accordingly. Full details are available in our Privacy Policy.

3. One Person, One Vote

Each person is entitled to cast one vote per poll. This is both a technical rule and a civic principle: the integrity of the Platform depends on the honest participation of each user. Votes are anonymised using cryptographic hashing — no individual vote can be traced back to a specific person. Any attempt to circumvent this principle undermines the collective voice the Platform is designed to build.

4. User Conduct

You agree not to:

• Submit false, misleading or fraudulent information in any form or registration
• Attempt to vote multiple times on the same poll through automated means or multiple accounts
• Use the Platform to spread hate speech, incitement to violence, or discriminatory content
• Attempt to compromise the security, integrity or availability of the Platform
• Scrape, copy or redistribute Platform data without prior written consent
• Impersonate another person or entity
• Use the Platform for commercial advertising without authorization

Content moderation: The Platform prohibits content that incites violence, promotes hatred based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, nationality or disability, or that is manifestly illegal. Moderation decisions are currently made by the Platform founder. As the community grows, we aim to publish a transparent moderation policy. Users may report content they believe violates these rules by writing to privacy@unforthepeople.org.

5. Poll Content and Proposals

Poll proposals submitted by users may be reviewed before publication. We reserve the right to reject or modify proposals that are offensive, illegal, or outside the scope of global civic debate. Published polls are the property of UN for the People and may be shared publicly with attribution.

Official Polls are those curated and published under the main platform agenda. As the platform grows, we may explore the creation of an Editorial Committee composed of verified community members to help guide the selection of Official Polls. Any such governance structure would be defined and communicated in advance. Until then, editorial decisions remain the responsibility of the Platform founder.

6. Honorary Fellow and Ambassador Membership

• Membership is personal and non-transferable
• The first 250 registered users receive the title of Honorary Fellow; subsequent registrants receive the title of UN for the People Citizen with a ranking number
• Rankings are dynamic and may change based on referral activity
• Ambassador applications are subject to review and approval by our team
• We reserve the right to revoke membership for violations of these Terms

7. Intellectual Property

All content, design, logos and software on the Platform are the intellectual property of UN for the People. You may not reproduce, distribute or create derivative works without explicit written permission. Voting data and poll results may be cited for journalistic or academic purposes with attribution to "UN for the People (unforthepeople.org)".

8. Nature of Poll Results

Poll results published on this Platform represent the collective opinions of participating users at a given point in time. They do not constitute official surveys, scientific polls, referendums, or legally or politically binding decisions of any kind. They are not representative samples of any national or global population. Their value lies in the aggregation of voluntary civic participation — a signal, not a mandate. UN for the People does not claim that poll results carry institutional authority; it claims that, at sufficient scale, they carry moral weight.

9. Editorial Content and Opinions

Certain sections of the Platform — including but not limited to Power vs Truth, the Wars analysis, the Economy and Democracy pages, the Awards, and editorial indices — contain analytical content, composite scores, and rankings based on publicly available data from independent third-party sources (such as Freedom House, V-Dem, RSF Press Freedom Index, PolitiFact, Reuters Fact Check and AFP Fact Check).

This content constitutes editorial opinion and commentary, not statements of verified fact. Composite indices and scores are analytical tools, not scientific verdicts or legal determinations. References to public figures are made in the context of their public roles and based on documented public record. UN for the People does not intend such content to defame, harass or harm any individual. If you believe any content about you is inaccurate or unjustified, contact us at privacy@unforthepeople.org and we will review it promptly.

10. Vote Anonymity and Data Protection

All votes are anonymised before storage. Where email verification is used, the email address is processed through a one-way cryptographic function and only the resulting hash is retained — the original address is not stored in plain text. The Platform is designed so that no vote can be attributed to a specific individual. For full details on data handling, see our Privacy Policy.

11. Disclaimers

• The Platform is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind
• We do not guarantee continuous availability of the Platform
• We are not responsible for content submitted by users

12. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, UN for the People shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages arising from your use of the Platform, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

13. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by applicable international law. For users in the EU, mandatory consumer protection laws of your country of residence apply. We encourage resolution of any disputes through good-faith negotiation.

14. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to update these Terms at any time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the Platform after changes constitutes acceptance.

15. Right to Erasure

In accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and equivalent legislation, you have the right to request the deletion of your personal data held by the Platform. To exercise this right, send a request to privacy@unforthepeople.org from the email address associated with your account or registration.

We will make reasonable efforts to process your request in a timely manner. Please note that because votes are stored as anonymous cryptographic hashes with no link to your identity, individual votes cannot be identified or deleted — only registration data (name, email hash, timestamp) can be removed. Deletion of registration data will result in the loss of your Honorary Fellow or Ambassador status.

2. Data We Collect

Depending on how you use the platform, we may collect the following data:

• Registration data — Name, email address, country, age range, gender, education level and motivation text when you register as an Honorary Fellow.
• Ambassador application data — Name, email, country, city, motivation text and social profile link when you apply to the Ambassador Program.
• Voting data — Your votes on polls and fact-check items, stored anonymously via a session identifier.
• Proposals — Poll proposals you submit, including title, description and category.
• Technical data — Browser session identifier (generated locally, not linked to your identity), language preference, approximate country derived from browser settings.
• Referral data — If you registered via a referral link, we store the referral code of the person who invited you.

3. Legal Basis for Processing

• Consent — Voting, poll proposals and anonymous participation are based on your freely given consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
• Contract — Registration as Honorary Fellow or Ambassador involves processing your data to fulfil the membership agreement.
• Legitimate interest — We process anonymous usage data to maintain and improve platform security and functionality.

4. How We Use Your Data

• To manage your membership as Honorary Fellow or Ambassador
• To display aggregated, anonymous voting results on the platform
• To review and respond to poll proposals
• To prevent duplicate voting via session identifiers
• To send you essential platform communications if you registered (no marketing without explicit consent)
• To compute and display the Honorary Fellow leaderboard based on referral activity

5. Data Storage and Processors

Your data is stored on Supabase (a cloud database provider with servers in the EU), which acts as our data processor under a Data Processing Agreement. Supabase complies with GDPR and employs industry-standard encryption at rest and in transit.

No data is sold, rented or shared with third parties for commercial or advertising purposes.

6. Cookies and Local Storage

This platform uses no advertising or tracking cookies. We use only:

• localStorage — To store your session identifier (anonymous), your voting choices and your consent preferences. This data never leaves your device unless you actively submit a vote or form.
• sessionStorage — To temporarily store referral codes from invitation links during your visit.

You can clear this data at any time by clearing your browser's site data.

7. Data Retention

• Fellow and Ambassador registration data — Retained for the duration of your membership. You may request deletion at any time.
• Vote data — Retained indefinitely in anonymous, aggregated form for statistical purposes.
• Poll proposals — Retained until reviewed and processed.

8. Your Rights (GDPR)

If you are located in the EU/EEA, you have the following rights:

• Right of access — Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Right to rectification — Request correction of inaccurate data.
• Right to erasure — Request deletion of your personal data ("right to be forgotten").
• Right to restriction — Request that we limit the processing of your data.

9. Children's Privacy

If you are a California resident, you have the following additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

• Right to Know — Request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal data we have collected about you in the past 12 months.
• Right to Delete — Request deletion of personal data we have collected, subject to certain exceptions.
• Right to Opt-Out — We do not sell personal data. You therefore do not need to opt out of any sale.
